If you have ever wondered what the Holy Spirit does, you are asking an important biblical question. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or a vague feeling. He is God with us, actively working in the lives of believers and in the church.
The Bible gives us a clear and encouraging picture of the Holy Spirit. He points us to Jesus, helps us understand God’s Word, changes our hearts, and gives us power to live faithfully.
What is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity: one God who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is fully God, personal, holy, and present with His people.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth.”
John 14:16–17, CSB
Jesus called the Holy Spirit a Counselor, Helper, and Spirit of truth. This means the Holy Spirit is not distant from the ordinary needs of life. He comforts, teaches, guides, convicts, and strengthens those who trust in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit was active in creation, spoke through the prophets, empowered Jesus’ ministry, and came to dwell in believers. The same Spirit who worked throughout the Bible is still at work today.
What does the Holy Spirit do in the Bible?
The Holy Spirit’s work is broad, but it is never confusing or disconnected from Jesus and Scripture. Here are nine ways the Bible describes His work.
1. He reveals Jesus
The Holy Spirit always brings glory to Jesus. He helps us see who Jesus is, understand what Jesus has done, and trust Jesus as Savior and Lord.
“He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”

When the Holy Spirit is working, our attention is not ultimately drawn to a personality, an experience, or a performance. We are drawn to Jesus.
2. He gives new life
The Holy Spirit brings spiritual life. We cannot make ourselves new through willpower or religious activity. God gives new birth, and the Spirit makes us alive to Him.
“Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
John 3:5, CSB
New life in Christ changes what we love, what we believe, and how we live. Growth takes time, but the Spirit begins a real work in every believer.
3. He lives in believers
Everyone who belongs to Christ receives the Holy Spirit. His presence is not reserved for a special class of Christians. He makes believers His dwelling place.
“Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God?”
1 Corinthians 6:19, CSB
Because the Spirit lives in us, ordinary life matters. Our words, choices, relationships, bodies, work, and private decisions all become opportunities to honor God.
4. He teaches and reminds us
The Holy Spirit helps us understand the truth of God’s Word and remember what Jesus has said. He does not replace Scripture; He opens our hearts to receive and obey it.
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.”
John 14:26, CSB
This is one reason Bible reading and prayer belong together. We read the Word with humility and ask the Spirit to teach us how to live it.
5. He guides believers
The Holy Spirit guides God’s people into truth and faithful obedience. His guidance will agree with the Bible and will produce the character of Jesus, not confusion, pride, or manipulation.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
John 16:13, CSB
Sometimes His guidance comes through a clear conviction from Scripture. Sometimes it comes through wise counsel, prayer, circumstances, or a growing sense of direction. We test every impression against God’s Word.
6. He convicts us of sin
The Holy Spirit lovingly shows us where we have turned away from God. Conviction is not the same as condemnation. Condemnation drives us from God in hopelessness, while the Spirit’s conviction leads us back to Jesus in repentance and faith.
“When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment.”
John 16:8, CSB
When the Spirit convicts you, do not hide. Confess your sin, receive God’s forgiveness, and take the next obedient step.
7. He produces spiritual fruit
The Spirit changes the way we treat people and respond to life. His work becomes visible over time in a growing pattern of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
Galatians 5:22–23, CSB
Spiritual fruit is not a way to earn God’s love. It is evidence that the Spirit is making us more like Jesus. A Spirit-filled life is increasingly marked by Christlike character.
8. He gives spiritual gifts
The Holy Spirit equips believers to serve others and build up the church. Spiritual gifts are not trophies or proof that one person is more important than another. They are gifts of grace meant to bless people and point them to God.
“A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good.”
1 Corinthians 12:7, CSB
God’s people have different callings and different gifts. We can serve with humility, learn from one another, and make room for the Spirit’s work with wisdom and order.
9. He gives power to witness
The Holy Spirit gives believers courage and power to tell others about Jesus. Witness is not reserved for pastors or professional speakers. Every Christian can share what Christ has done.
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8, CSB
The Spirit helps us speak with courage and love. He also helps us live in a way that makes the gospel believable to the people around us.
What does it mean to be Spirit-filled?
To be Spirit-filled means to yield your life to the Holy Spirit’s leadership. It does not mean that a person is perfect, dramatic, or never struggles. It means the Spirit is welcomed, obeyed, and given room to shape everyday life.
Being Spirit-filled includes:
- ✓ Trusting Jesus and walking in His grace.
- ✓ Listening to God through Scripture and prayer.
- ✓ Turning from sin when the Spirit brings conviction.
- ✓ Growing in the fruit of the Spirit.
- ✓ Serving others with the gifts God provides.
- ✓ Sharing the hope of Jesus with courage and love.
Paul tells believers to keep being filled with the Spirit. This is a daily posture of surrender, not a single moment we use to measure ourselves against someone else.
